Tiivistelmä:A steady increase in the number of females choosing to work for themselves, instead of someone else, represents one of the more striking recent trends in the U.S. labor market. The findings presented here are interesting and suggestive. The finding that self-employment increased more for females who faced increasing potential earnings in wage-and-salary employment suggest that returns to skill may explain at least part of the recent rise in female self-employment. Women with low skill levels who faced declining real wages in wage-and-salary employment did not turn to self-employment in the same proportions as women with higher skill levels.
