| Tiivistelmä: | Following the proposals initiated by the 1989 White Paper, Working for Patients, the first general practitioner (GP) fundholders were established on 1 April 1991, with 306 practices granted fundholding status. This figure has since risen to 2,000, with fundholding practices now serving approximately 36 per cent of the population. The current fundholding scheme allows GP practices or groups of practices with 7,000 patients or more to manage their own budgets for three categories of expenditure: practice staff; drugs and appliances; and a range of hospital and community services. |
