| Tiivistelmä: | In the 1980s the wave of the Green Revolution finally reached to Bangladesh and the eastern part of India, one of the most backward and poorest rice-producing areas in Asia. The engine of growth was the accelerated diffusion of tubewells. The exploitation of groundwater through the use of TWs converted the fallow land of the dry season into fertile paddy fields well suited to seed-fertilizer technology. Since the launching of the privatization program, investment in TWs has been carried out in rural areas on an individual basis. |
