Tiivistelmä:The article gives a brief overview of some politicoeconomic critiques of the European ihtegration process.Democratic deficit of European institutions is described and it is stressed that this deficit lead to a creation of an international cartel of European.politicians. The result of this is high centralization of European institutions and high influence of interest groups on the decision-making process.Harmonization of policies on European level often serves only to prevent competition between governments and in effect hinders competition in the common market. In particular, it is stressed that goals such as harmonization of taxes or introduction of a common currency, could more efficiently be achieved by relying on competition between governments and central banks than by an arbitrary decision of European institutions.(p. 59)
