| Tiivistelmä: | As a result of fairly liberal European Union (EU) directives with respect to the banking sector, the national markets - formerly strictly regulated - have gradually opened up. This process has also been backed by technological progress and financial innovation. Nevertheless, sharp differences remain among the individual EU member states regarding the structure of the banking sector, both in terms of the number of banks and branch offices, as well as their relative size. |
