Tiivistelmä:Restaurants with individual service and item-level pricing are widely thought to have originated in Paris after the French revolution. While establishments of that description did, indeed, appear widely in Paris after 1789, restaurants od some description operated in Paris before revolution. Moreover, the necessary economic conditions for a la carte food service existed in other parts of the world centuries earlier. For example, by contemporary accounts 13th-century Hangchow, China, hsoted a lively restaurant scene that served local and travelers alike.
