Tiivistelmä:This paper reports a questionnaire survey as a part of an on-going evaluation of the effect of a bursary scheme on recruitment to Cambridge University (here as: C.U.) aiming to identify factors encouraging or discouraging highly successful A Level students from applying to C.U. There are three main dimensions found to be associated with the decision to apply to C.U.: i. the nature of the courses, ii. the prestige of the university and iii. the anxiety about the application process combined with fear of failure. There are found complex interactions btw. these three dimensions governing the decision to apply to C.U. These findings are relevant to other prestigious universities.
