Tiivistelmä: | It is generally assumed that mergers affect negatively the well-being and work attitudes of employees through the increased fear of losing ones job. The authors disagree with this myth, and drawing on the social identity theory they argue that workplace isnt only the source of financial compensation but it is an essential part on the individuals self concept in terms of identification with the organization. Evidence from previous studies is examined and the key issues of social identity approach important to the analysis of mergers are underlined. A study conducted during a merger is also described in the article in order to illustrate the authors ideas about the organizational identification after the merger. The aim is to go above and beyond the effects of job insecurity. The authors conclude how managers should pay more attention to the psychological effects by providing a feel of continuity and enough communication. |
