Tiivistelmä: | The value of a method of systematic process analysis (here as: s-p-a.) that can be applied in a small number of cases (as: s-n-of-cs.) is explored. Among three modes of explanation are distinguished: historically specific, multivariate, and theory-oriented. It is argued that s-p-a. has special value for developing theory-oriented explanations. The steps required to perform s-p-a. are outlined, with reference to Owen's investigation. Comparing the results, examined are the conditions under which each method is warranted. Against conceptions of the 'comparative method' implying that s-n-of-cs. studies provide weak grounds for causal inference, it is argued that the intensive examination of s-n-of-cs. can be an appropriate research design for testing such inferences. |
