Tiivistelmä:This article presents a comparative content analysis of the French and the US national press from year 1965 to 1997. The aim is to test hypotheses about the influence of media structure on journalistic discourse. The two presses are presented as contrasting models, where the US press is more commercialized and the French press more tied to the political field. Furthermore, it is shown that their differences have not diminished over time. The French press (Le Monde and Le Figaro) are shown to offer more critical coverage and more civil society viewpoints than The New York Times, which is shown to cover more closely political elite viewpoints.
