Tiivistelmä:This paper looks at the issue of institutional diversity in higher education systems from a comparative (cross-national) and longitudinal perspective. In spite of the attention to diversity in policy debates, merely a limited amount of studies deal with methodological issues. Furthermore, also the number of empirical studies on institutional diversity is low. Based on data on various Western higher education systems, developments in systems' diversity are illustrated. In addition, these data are put in the context of current national (and supranational) policy debates, especially the role of governments and markets, on maintaining or increasing diversity. The following 10 OECD countries/regions are included: Australia, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Flanders, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom (UK).
