Tiivistelmä: | Three experiments (hereafter as: expms.) are used to test the exemplar cuing (EC) and frequency format (as: f-f.) accounts of how the 'imaginability' (here as: im-ty.) of low-probability (as: l-p.) events is enhanced. The expms. manipulated im-ty. through varying the statistics used to describe negative (e.g. being scarred as a result of laser surgery) and positive (e.g. winning a lottery) l-p. events. The results strongly supported the f-f. account, whereby im-ty. is enhanced by using f-f. for conveying statistical information. However, there is only limited support found for exemplar cuing (EC) theory. In general, the results support the claim that the im-ty. of outcomes plays a key role in thinking about l-p. events, but question the mechanisms specified by EC theory for mediating the effects. |
