| Tiivistelmä: | A significant international effort to generate direct and indirect estimates of real GDP per capita in US dollars has been going on for many years. Some of the former efforts to make an unbiased estimate of real GDP for the purpose of comparison across countries and over time are explained. The nature of the asymptotic parameter bias in the variables model approach is investigated. The theoretical usefulness of parameter estimation and forecasting is stressed. Empirical usefulness is evaluated by comparing the results of direct and indirect estimation procedures in the context of an international sectorial employment model. Several statistical issues are addressed concerning the optimal form of the model. |
