Tiivistelmä:Most retail chains operate a system of buying into central warehouses from which branch stocks are replenished. The estimation of the order of magnitude of the benefit a company would derive from introducing a stock-allocation system is attempted. In some retail sectors, unsatisfied demand for one product line is readily transferred to a substitute brand with no actual loss of sales but with an element of customer dissatisfaction. In other sectors, such as white or brown electrical goods in a competitive market, unsatisfied demand will frequently result in lost sales. The actual benefits of stock allocation obviously depends on the parameters to which a company is working, but it would be in the interest of most retail chains to consider an allocation procedure.
