Tiivistelmä:Individual incentives were not working at Tech Form Industries (TFI). In an effort to stop TFI's downward spiral, management switched from a piece-rate system to gainsharing with surprising results. Performance at TFI changed drastically, and today defective products returned by customers are down 83 p.c.; direct labor hours spent on repairs have decreased 50 p.c.; grievances are down 41 p.c.; and employee responses to surveys reveal higher levels of cooperation and satisfaction. The problems with individual incentives are summarized. The gainsharing plan applied at TFI is described. The process of transition is analyzed. The most important results are discussed.
