| Tiivistelmä: | Design aid for superheaters is described. The complexity of large-scale design problems typically limits the design engineer's focus to one of producing a feasible design with only secondary concern for cost. Some of the problem difficulties that arise from attempting to design lower-cost superheaters result from the quantity discounts and special pricing functions available to the boiler manufacturer. The specific problem addressed by design aid for superheaters is the creation of superheaters which meet performance requirements at reduced material costs. Most importantly, the approach illustrates the effective integration of pseudo-random search techniques into a knowledge-based system. |
