Tiivistelmä:The US General Account Office, the investigative arm of the congress, found that the insurance industry made 2,2 billion USD malpractice profit between 1975 and 1985. At the same time the medical community was saddled with dramatic increases for malpractice insurance premiums. The evidence suggests that it is the insurance industry itself, and not the legal system, that is responsible for skyrocketing premiums. The author argues that the relative lack of regulation of this industry makes even determining profits a complex matter, so only the proper regulation of the industry, not a tort reform would stop the dramatic increase in insurance costs for many physicians and hospitals.
