| Tiivistelmä: | The strategic implications of layoffs have largely been ignored so far. However, many managers are anguishing about the consequences of layoff announcements for their firms and shareholders with the passage of the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. A test on the reaction of the securities market to announcements of nearly 200 layoffs is described in the article. It was found that investors reacted negatively to announcements attributable to financial reasons. Negative preannouncement reactions occured when negative hints about firms preceded announcements. |
