| Tiivistelmä: | The development of off-shore wave-energy converters /WECs/ could contribute one TW /10 12 W/ of electricity to global energy supply. The environmental problems are seen as minimal. Many different wave power plants, some of them multi-purpose, have been proposed, assessed and cost estimated. A strong R&D programme would be needed to achieve significant utilization and should be based on extensive international collaboration. During the introduction period of wave energy, subsidies will be needed, but in the final stages, the installation of off-shore WECs is expected to be profitable. |
