| Tiivistelmä: | This article explores the macro context of individual/household problem debt. Research on problem debt has focused on individuals or families with the environment being treated as exogenous. A major theme of this paper is that debt behaviour is part of the dynamic of capitalism. Problem debtors may be created to satisfy the needs of an inherently unstable macroeconomic system. The problem which then arises is that this may generate further instability throughout the system. The underlying process of encouraging debt is viewed as a byproduct of the push for high status consumption as a foundation for trend growth in the economy. |
