| Tiivistelmä: | Electric vehicles may not pollute from the tailpipe, but the electricity has to be made somewhere. In most of the nation , that somewhere is a coal, oil, nuclear or natural gas-fired turbine. The pollution stays in the area where the plant operates. Not only is there the inefficiency of turning fossil fuels or uranium into electricity instead of burning fuel directly in an engine, there are line losses in getting that electricity to the vehicle plug. Electric vehicle drive trains, however, are extremely efficient compared to combustion engines. Promoters claim that there is less pollution - even including the power plants - with electric cars than with gasoline-fueled cars. Even if that proves true, the drawback remains the backward and energy-sucking state of battery technology and the toxic problem of battery disposal. |
