| Tiivistelmä: | One of the central questions in relation to the development of research-intensive industries is the relative roles to be played by organic growth and mergers and acquisitions in the evolution of the industry structure. This special issue examines current re-structuring processes in the global pharmaceuticals sector, focusing in particular on mergers such as that between Glaxo- Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham that produced Glaxo SmithKline, and on changes in the division of labour within and between firms in the R&D and drug discovery processes. This introductory paper sets out the main issues to be addressed, provides a synopsis of the contribution of each of the other papers, and offers an account of how their arguments interact and complement each other. |
