Tiivistelmä:Trade unions are usually depicted as monopolists restricting supply in order to drive up wages. Introductory courses on economics tend to neglect the "good" things that may follow from unionisation of the labour force. A simple exposition of Freeman and Medoff's views is provided. They are the first to use conventional econometric methods which supply arguments for unions as promoters of productivity. The resource model of trade unions is presented. The results of comparative studies are outlined with the evidence of productivity growth as a positive impact of trade unions and good industrial relations climate. Remarks on profits and strikes are made. Methodological issues are summarized.
