Tiivistelmä: | If commodities can be perfectly differentiated by time and day of week, the usual fundamental theorems of welfare economics apply and market outcomes would achieve an appropriate tradeoff between the higher costs, if any, of extended trading hours and the benefits of wider choice of shopping time. It is shown that there was a possibility that inefficient Sunday trading equilibria could occur. From a comprehensive set of relevant data on costs and demands in UK retailing the conclusion could be drawn that although inefficient equilibria could occur, in fact they did not. Sensitivity tests were made. The results do not give arguments against Sunday trading, but opening in an unrestricted equilibrium would not necessarily be optimal. |
