| Tiivistelmä: | The historical overview of the development of USA industrial research indicates that the structure of the institutions performing R and D matters is a great deal. The origins of industrial research, the role of intrafirm and contract research, and the relation between higher education and industrial research between 1900-40 in the USA are analyzed. It is concluded that the structure of the twentieth century USA R and D system of which the industrial research laboratory was a central component, now may be changing Many USA firms are exploring alternatives to exclusive reliance on intrafirm sources of innovation. |
