Tiivistelmä: | This paper aims to examine how business professionals learn both through sharing knowledge (here as: knwl.) with others, and from their own direct experience (as: exp./exps). Two contrasting approaches to knowledge management (KM) can be found: 1. knwl. should be disseminated efficiently through the use of information technology-based (as: t-b.) systems (as: t-b-stms.), 2. it is more important to encourage and share the knowing arising directly from the exps. of employees (as: empls.). This paper explores these two approaches from interviews with consultants and project managers in six major Japanese companies. It is concluded that there is often a trade-off btw. t-b-stms. and exp., where strong technological systems inhibit experience-based learning, and refer to this as the knowledge-sharing (KS) dilemma. However, this is not always the case. The results suggest that when empls. get encouraged to customize t-b. knwl. for purposes of their own, this will actually enhance their capability for experiential learning etc. |
