Tiivistelmä: | The aim of this study is to empirically investigate and evaluate the moderating impacts of extent of virtualness on diverse well-established predictors of new product development team satisfaction. Our study focuses on 178 different new product development teams from various industries and use extent of virtualness as a structural attribute of the teams, measuring it on a continuum. The studied predictors of team satisfaction are relationship conflict, familiarity, goal clarity and preference for group work. It was found that (1) relationship conflicts harms team member satisfaction increasingly as teams become more virtual, mainly because it is very difficult for virtual teams' members to resolve their interpersonal disputes; (2) the relationship between the preference for group work and team satisfaction is moderated by extent of virtualness, such that group work preference improves team satisfaction more as virtualness increases; (3) goal clarity and familiarity are not moderated by extent of virtualness, however they have a substantial direct effect on team satisfaction. Managerial and research implications of these results relative to new product development teams are also considered. |
