Tiivistelmä:This paper supposes biotechnology firms over time to learn from their alliance (henceforth as: alnc./alncs.) experience and to develop general alnc. capabilities. Specifically, the speed with which they enter into new research alncs., e.g. their alnc. formation rate, is expected to be affected by capabilities built up in prior alncs. and by characteristics of their partners, as well. Using longitudinal event history data for the complete population of U.S. biotechnology firms from 1973 to 1999 to test four hypotheses about factors affecting the rate of new alnc. formation, it is suggested that the speed of entering research alncs. be affected by prior experience of the focal firm, but not by partner characteristics. The findings provide evidence that biotechnology firms learn how to learn more effectively from multiple research alncs. However, this effect is generalized and not tied to specific characteristics of the alnc. partner.
