| Tiivistelmä: | Two controversial airline mergers are analyzed that resulted in airport dominance and may have created substantial market power. The two mergers analyzed offer a unique opportunity to learn more about the market power and competitive advantage that can result from airport dominance. In both cases that occurred in 1986, the merger left the surviving carrier with more than three-quarters of the traffic at the major hub airport where the merging airlines had competed. The effect found from the two mergers are broadly consistent with conclusions reached by another author using different methods. These findings are analyzed. |
