Tiivistelmä:Japanese industrial relations prefer enterprise unionism to trade unionism. As a result, major Japanese firms discourage employees from identifying with occupations or skills in the first place. This practice results in contradictions in computer departments: (i) Companies prefer generalists. (ii) Managers limit the numbers of permanent staff by using subcontractors, especially working on site. (iii) The peculiar nature of the subcontractor system places the majority in the computer services industry in an even worse position than computer specialists are in large user firms.
