His mother tries gently to redirect his attention, but with every tug the child emits a bloodcurdling shriek. Finally, her resistance worn down, the woman rummages into her purse, pulls out a thick wad of bank notes and counts out RMB 4,000 ($480). They walk away with the packaged toy in hand, the mother looking bewildered, the child wearing a grin of triumph. |
