The leaders of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party, the largest bloc in the three-party government coalition, had imagined that Prime Minister Murayama Tomiichi would hold on for a few months longer. Not until around cherry blossom time, after the budget was passed, would the 71-year-old premier graciously pass on the job to the LDP's vigorous new leader Hashimoto Ryutaro. Once he had demonstrated his statesmanship by hosting U.S. President Bill Clinton in April, Hashimoto would dissolve the House of Representatives, and schedule a general election. |
