Tiivistelmä:The authors of the article state that modern painting was a response to an increase in the demand for innovation in art. Inspired by Baudelaire's declaration that beauty consisted in large part of "the age, its fashions, its morals, its emotions," during the 1860's a generation of young artists began to search for new ways to portray modern life. These artists departed only gradually from the traditional methods they had learned as students, but Impressionism emerged from this search. Yet as the demand for innovation continued to grow, new generations of artists looked for methods that would allow them to make more rapid progress. Whether they found their inspiration in scientific treatises or in litera symbolism, these artists discarded older rules of painting as they sought to express their ideas and emotions.
