Tiivistelmä:The study deals with why for-profit firms contribute to free, libre, or open source software (FLOSS) development and why some contribute more than others. The results suggest an explanation based on users' skill level. With skilled users, opening the software is likely to result in a better product, for the user base will contribute improvements. The concept of the dominant user's skill is introduced and a theoretical model is set up to better understand how it may condition the nature and outcome of the competition between a FLOSS firm and a proprietary firm.
