| Tiivistelmä: | From the British coal industry's viewpoint, electricity privatization is not an isolated event but the latest in a series of problems which have beset the industry throughout most of this century. As the industry declined, so it became increasingly dependent on sales to the electricity supply industry. Successive governments have used state-owned electricity generators as an instrument in support programmes for the indigenous coal industry. State protection for coal via power generation cannot survive electricity privatization, at least on its present scale. There are clear social advantages to be obtained by introducing competition into the coal market, freeing entry. |
