Tiivistelmä:Most contemporary theory construction methodologies attempt to build internally consistent theories of limited scope. Relatively little attention has been paid to the opportunities offered by tensions, oppositions, and contradictions among explanations of the same phenomenon. A set of theory-building strategies which help researchers in taking advantage of theoretical tensions is offered. Such tensions can be regarded as paradoxes of social theory. Four different modes of working with them are distinguished: accepting and using them constructively; clarifying connections between levels of analysis; using time to relate structure and action; introducing new concepts to resolve the paradox.
