Tiivistelmä:An obvious analogy can be found between market space and the ecosystem where products might be regarded as species, market success as natural selection etc. This paper aims to examine killer products, comparing them with the 'killer weed', nicknamed as 'killer algae' (Caulerpa taxifolia) which prevents other plants from growing. Its success may be harmful to the ecosystem as a whole. This paper examines several killer products and technologies, incl. the iPod, IBM PC, QWERTY keyboard and digital cameras etc. It is questioned whether killer species-products are unpredictable and uncontrollable. In short, the paper aims at summarizing what makes a product 'killer' and the role of design in this process.
