Tiivistelmä:This field study delineates the relationship btw. interpersonal affect (hereafter as: int-pers-a.) and performance (as: perf.) ratings using data from 190 supervisors (here as: sup-vis.) in the U.S., and 113 sup-vis. in India. In both samples, int-pers-a. and perf. level were found to have significant effects on perf. ratings. Results from the U.S. sample indicated that raters are able to separate their liking for a subordinate from actual perf. when assigning perf. ratings, suggesting that the int-pers-a. affect does not operate as a bias in the appraisal process. Results from the Indian sample, however, suggest that sup-vis. inflate ratings of low performers, suggesting that local cultural norms may be operating as a moderator.
