Tiivistelmä:This article deals with the development of regional shared services centers (SSCs) with the strategy and operations of multinational enterprises (MNEs) in Asia, Europe, North America (here as: N.A.) and Latin America (as: L.A.), as well as the emergence of global SSCs. The steps taken by leading MNEs to set up regional SSCs are described, providing useful guidelines for other firms to follow. Setting up an SSC is not a quick fix. The use of SSCs will build a strong regional presence, exploit synergies btw. the business units, and helps develop more unified strategies. In N.A. in the 1980s, General Electric Co. was the first company to implement a shared processing center. In Europe, setting up SSCs has been more challenging than in N.A. due to national differences in culture, currency and language. Elizabeth Arden International, a global cosmetics company, formed one of the earliest SSCs in Europe. SSCs have also been set up in Asia and L.A. by MNEs.
