Tiivistelmä: | Investigated are request (hereafter as: req./reqs.) and refusal (here as: ref./refs. and as: req-and-ref.) strategies (as: strs.) in the question-response sequences of interactions in routine press conferences (as: confs.) held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and the U.S. Department of State on the topic of the North Korea nuclear crisis during a period of 5 months. All journalists' utterances were identified as reqs., and instances of spokes-persons' non-compliance with requests were considered to be refs. It is found that: 1. req. for specific information was the most frequently adopted strategy in both U.S. and Chinese press confs. etc., 2. in the case of refs., direct refs. and reasons for ref. were frequent in the U.S. data while avoidance and insufficient answers being prevalent in the Chinese data. The cross-cultural differences in the strs. of req-and-ref. are discussed. |
