Tiivistelmä: | This study provides insight into the role of motivation (hereafter as: motn.) and constraints (here as: cntrs.) on behavioural intentions (henceforth as: b-ints.) before a mega event. The Psychological Continuum Model framework is used to integrate motn. and leisure cntrs. theory to explore attraction towards the 2008 Olympic Games. Semi-structured interviews (N = 47) and a questionnaire (N = 235) distributed in Australia and in the U.S. were used to identify and measure three motivational themes: i. cultural learning, ii. cultural experience and iii. olympic event interest. There were three perceived cntrs: i. structural, ii. interpersonal and iii. intrapersonal. The motives were found to be positively related to b-ints. whereas cntrs. were found to be negatively related. Further analysis uncovered the interaction btw. motives and perceived cntrs. led to two different forms of b-ints: i. intentions to travel and attend the event vs. ii. stay home to watch the event on TV. |
