| Tiivistelmä: | The article reviews tourism development in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Although arrival in the Baltic States are dominated by same-day visitors, comprising 70 % of the 9 million visitors in 1998, tourist arrivals have grown rapidly. Tourism makes an important contribution to the fledgling national economies of the Baltics. The states have considerable potential for leisure travel. However, more needs to be done to upgrade facilities and increase the range of products available - partuculaly outside the capital cities where tourism is concentrated, and in which an average of 47 % of the hotel capacity is now situated. |
