Tiivistelmä:Forest Planning Model /FORPLAN/ is a linear programming system that consists of a matrix generator and a report writer. It was developed as a required primary analysis tool for national forest planning in the USA. It is used widely to help planning teams develop forest-wide plans as dictated by the National Forest Management Act of 1976. The history and planning activity of the USDA Forest service is described, an evaluation of the use of FORPLAN models and examples of how the system is used is presented based on nine years experience. Lessons for operations research are considered, a number of conclusions and recommendations are discussed.
