Tiivistelmä: | Language instructor's knowledge (hereafter as: l-i-kn.) of the target language (as: lng.) is one source of his/her authority. However, in this paper attention is drawn to the potential gap btw. a l-i-kn. of the lng. in use required by learners from a specialized professional community, and the expectations of stakeholders that the lng. instructor does indeed have such knowledge. The potential existence of such a gap thus calls into question the instructor's warrant to teach as "an authority" on the specialized lng. required by the learners. This paper suggests that a data-driven lexical approach to syllabus and materials design is one way of increasing the authority of the instructor and providing him/her with the knowledge base necessary for the design of English for Special Purposes (ESP) courses with "high surrender value" for corporate clients. |
