Tiivistelmä:The author states that it should be stressed, however, that UK economy was slowing sharply even before 11th September: 1) GDP rose at an annualised rate of only 1.8% in Q2, below its long-run trend rate of 2!/2-2%% pa, with manufacturing output falling at an annual rate of 8%. 2) The purchasing managers' survey was well below 50 in July and August, suggesting that the trend in manufacturing activity remained downwards (although the ONS reported a sharp rise in production in August). And the CBI industrial trends survey reported that manufacturers' order books in August were their weakest since early 1999. 3) Surveys suggest that growth also slowed sharply in the service sector through the summer.
