| Tiivistelmä: | The division of the Czechoslovak Federal Republic took effect on January 1st 1993. For Slovakia the first year of its independence ended with a further fall in output, rapid consumer price inflation and a high rate of unemployment. In view of a number of inconsistencies in the official statistics, it is possible that the fall in GDP was in fact much greater. Economic policy efforts were intensified in the course of the year 1993. The devaluation of the Slovak crown was an attempt to reduce the budget deficit and capital flight. |
