Tiivistelmä:The first person in modern times to advocate the government funding of science was Rashid al-Din (1247-1318) the Vizier to the Persian Empire. A scholarly man, he collected all the knowledge open to him in his vast Jami al-Tawarheh (1302) where he wrote that, for governments: "There is no greater service than to encourage science and scholarship." Unfortunately he was executed for blasphemy, after which his head was carried through the streets of Tabriz to the cries of: "This is the head of a Jew who abused the name of God. May God's curse be upon him!"
