Tiivistelmä:Although some "optimism" has been reported from furniture trade, new models have been enlivening the appliance sector, and through 1994 various authorities insisted that the economy was moving out of recession, consumers have remained unconvinced. Purchasers have been shy of commitments such as new mortgages, or major additions to debt for large items in the furniture or appliance ranges. This is not surprising, with economists warning about the dangers of renewed imflation, salary increases for the great majority being held down and reports of job losses continuing. Manufacturers' fortunes have largely depended on their export business, and the demise of Rumbelows only served to underline just how fiercely competitive is the trading climate facing retailers in the UK, particularly in the electrical sector.
