Tiivistelmä:Vodka lacks a long tradition of consumption in the UK, making its mark only in the 1950s. It is most associated with the countries of Eastern Europe although, the bulk of vodka drunk in the UK is domestically produced, the industry having expanded to serve rising demand. Having overtaken gin in 1986 vodka has now for a decade been the second largest selling spirit in the UK. In 1996 it accounted for 18.4% of total spirits volume, compared with 13.8% ten years earlier. The factors that have helped vodka outperform the spirits market over the last two decades should enable it to continue to do so, although the growth in its market share is expected to be slower than in the recent past. Competition for the attentions of younger drinkers is intensifying all the time with the appearance of new styles of drink.
