Tiivistelmä:This report updates the former one published in 1993. It covers the markets for standard and healthy baked beans in tomato souce and bean variants. Sales of baked beans amounted to 1,125 mn cans, worth 252 mn pounds in the 12 months to August 1997. Sales of baked beans in tomato sauce fell by 1.8% in value and 4.7% in volume in the 12 months to August 1997. The bean variant market has been more dynamic, rising by 9.4% in value and 8.3% in volume. 1995 and the first half of 1996 saw a price war in the baked bean sector. The leading multiple grocers used budget own-label baked beans as loss leaders to win back share from the likes of Aldi and Netto and prices plummeted to 3-4p for a 420 gm can. While volume sales increased, the value of the market fell by 7% in 1995 and a further 1% in 1996.
